Catheter Flushing Protocol (SASH)
Supplies Needed:
- 2 Saline syringes (sodium chloride)
- 2 Heparin syringes
- Alcohol prep pads
Wash Hands:
With soap and water for at least 15 seconds (sing Happy Birthday) and dry with paper towels.
(S) Step 1: Saline flush
- Remove cap from Saline syringe
- Remove air from syringe by first pulling back on plunger, then pushing forward on plunger until all air is removed.
- Scrub the clave with alcohol prep pad for 10-15 seconds.
- Twist the syringe onto the end of the clave.
- Open the clamp on the catheter/extension set and flush the catheter with ____ mL of Saline (sodium chloride)
- Remove the Saline syringe from the clave.
(A) Step 2: Administer Therapy
You will be administering your therapy by:
IV Pump____
IV Push____
Gravity ____
(S) Step 3: Saline flush
Disconnect medication tubing/syringe from the end of clave, then See Step 1 and repeat.
(H) Step 4: Heparin flush
- Remove cap from Heparin syringe
- Remove air from syringe by first pulling back on plunger, then pushing forward on plunger until all air is removed.
- Scrub the clave with alcohol prep pad for 10-15 seconds.
- Twist the Heparin syringe onto the end of the clave.
- Flush the catheter with _____ mL of Heparin.
- Remove the Heparin syringe from the clave and clamp extension set.
Suggestions:
- If you meet resistance while flushing, make sure all clamps are open.
- Do not force a flush. Call your nurse with any questions or concerns.
Reminders:
- Double Lumen: Flush the unused lumen with _____mL of Heparin every day.
- Blood in Line: Flush the lumen with _____mL of Heparin as needed.
- DO NOT put caps on the end of the clave.
